Embracing Life's Moments Without the Fear of Missing Out

by Ali Novitsky, MD

I've been reflecting on something many of us are all too familiar with — FOMO, the fear of missing out.

This week, it hit home once again.

Mark surprised us with tickets to see Gracie Abrams in Philly. It was an unexpected treat, something that promised to be a cherished memory with family and friends. Yet, on the day of the show, I found myself utterly exhausted.

The allure of sweatpants, the cozy embrace of my couch, snuggles with my dog, and the idea of an early bedtime seemed unbeatable.

In that moment, I faced a dilemma that FOMO often presents — would I regret this decision? What if something incredible happened that I missed?

But here's what I'm learning: sometimes, honoring our need for rest and recharge is just as valuable as adventures.

It's okay to pause and prioritize our well-being and mental health over the fear of missing out. By doing so, we're refueling to fully engage in future experiences waiting just around the corner. In fact, Wednesday night we had our first 76ers game.

And here is the best part: in my place, our youngest daughter got to bring her best friend. Together, they created amazing memories at the show. They appreciated their time together, and to my delight, I was not missed.

The next day, I played the Gracie album to and from school, and I had my fix. Plus, she is opening for the Taylor Swift concert that we will be attending soon.

I'm beginning to realize that FOMO is something that is worth working through. By letting go of the fear of missing out, we give ourselves the freedom to enjoy life in the present, savoring the small moments and valuing our personal time.

Wishing you a fantastic week, filled with everything you need!

xoxo-
